Background:  Dave Sauer was a long time member and historian for the Niagara Frontier Section of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA-NFS).  As an environmental professional, Dave was active in many environmental related community events and had a strong sense of environmental stewardship.  This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more high school seniors in continuing remembrance of Dave and his devotion to improving our environment.

Eligibility:  Any high school senior, who is in good academic standing, attending a recognized high school located within the New York State counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, or Wyoming during the 2023 - 2024 academic year and that will attend a recognized college or university in the 2024 - 2025 academic year is eligible.

Awards:  The number and amount of the scholarship(s) will be approved by the A&WMA-NFS Board of Directors.  It is anticipated that one or more scholarships will be awarded in amounts ranging from approximately $500 to $1,000.  Each scholarship is awarded for the 2024 - 2025 academic year only and is not renewable.

Selection:  The A&WMA-NFS Education Committee will review all completed applications submitted before midnight of the due date.  Awards will be made on the basis of academic record, leadership in school and community activities, and future academic/career potential. Application judging will not consider sex, race, religion, national origin, financial need, age, or physical disability.  The ultimate awards decision will be made at the discretion of the A&WMA-NFS Board of Directors based on recommendations from the A&WMA-NFS Education Committee.  The decisions of the A&WMA-NFS Board of Directors and A&WMA-NFS Education Committee on scholarship awards are final.  Scholarship awards will be announced around May 1, 2024.

Application:  The scholarship application must include all requested information outlined below:

I.      Affiliation:  Reviewers will consider if the applicant is a child, relative, acquaintance or friend of an A&WMA-NFS member.

II.     Academic Record:  Reviewers will consider the high school transcripts of the applicant.  The average of the applicant’s overall class ranking (as a percentile of the total number of students) will be considered.  The high school transcript(s) must be submitted as part of the application. 

III.   High School and Extracurricular Activities:  Reviewers will consider the applicant’s participation in clubs, sports, organizations, seminars, as well as work experience. Special consideration will be given to participation in environment-related activities or work.

IV.   Community Service and Volunteer Work:  Reviewers will consider the applicant’s involvement in the community and history of volunteer work.  Special consideration will be given to participation in environment-related volunteer work or community events.

V.    College Area of Study:  Reviewers will consider the applicant’s potential area of study at college. Special consideration will be given to study areas related to the environmental field. 

VI.   Environmental Interest Essay:  Reviewers will consider the applicant’s essay describing in 500 words or less, an environmental issue which interests the applicant, or description of an experience which the applicant had working to improve the environment (e.g., volunteer, school, or work). 

Only complete applications, including high school transcript(s), submitted no later than Friday, April 5, 2024 (midnight) will be considered.
