2018 Earth Day Grants
We had 8 winning Earth Day Grants this year for a total award of $4,000. A summary of the 8 projects follows:
2019 Erie County Envirothon- TheEnvirothon is being held on March 28. 2019 and May 2, 2019 at Village Green Park in Elma, NY. It provides a hands-on, outdoor-oriented competition open to all high school students in Erie County, with the idea of promoting environmental awareness for our future leaders, farmers, engaged citizens, conservationists, and environmentalists.
Buffalo Is Creative, Inc. - CreativeMornings/Buffalo is a free breakfast speaker series that’s been run in Buffalo every month for three years entirely by volunteers. It’s aim is to spark connections through a celebration of our city’s creative voices, believing that a scientist at their lab bench is as creative as a painter at their easel. For 2019, their goal is to make these events entirely waste-free, acting as a model for local organizations to weave environmental awareness throughout their programming. This grant will help them to purchase reusable items such as napkins and mugs or purchase a subscription to a local composting operation.
Engineers Without Borders UB Chapter - The University at Buffalo chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA was established in 2016 and comprises around 220 affiliate members from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. EWB-UB strives to build a better world and has taken up a water filtration and sanitization project to help a struggling international community in La Laguna, Nicaragua. They will provide centralized access to safe water, thus lower their overall waterborne infection rates, and generally improve the quality of life for the villagers of La Laguna.
Erie County Dept of Environment & Planning - Erie County Recycling attends school science fairs, events, and public festivals to educate students and adults about different facets of waste management and recycling. This grant will help them to purchase a landfill diorama to enhance these presentations with a hands on activity explain how landfills function.
Newfane Elementary School - This project would benefit their entire Kindergarten team (4 classrooms and 76 children). They are learning about germination and what plants need to grow. It is a part of their kindergarten standards. Children would plant the seeds, label them, watch them germinate, water them, and check on their growth. The growing product will be presented to mothers and fathers at our parent celebration during the week of Mother’s Day
Western New York Earth Day Family Expo- The WNY Earth Day Committee was founded seventeen years ago to educate families about caring for our Earth. They will be holding an event on June 29, 2019 at the Buffalo Zoo to help promote earth friendly activities.
WNY Stormwater Coalition c/o Erie County Dept. of Environment and Planning - The WNY Stormwater Coalition is sponsoring a rain barrel painting contest. The rain barrel painting contest is open to all schools and youth groups in Erie and Niagara counties. This creative and impactful educational activity focuses on stormwater pollution prevention, recycling rainwater, and reducing plastics consumption. Contest rain barrels are converted from recycled 30-55 gallon plastic food-grade drums that are sourced locally.
Wild Spirit Education, Inc. -Wild Spirit Education will provide five nocturnal themed environmental education programs in the Western New York region for the general public. These programs will allow the participants to explore nature at night in an interactive way.
